Maternal Development is proposed as a field of inquiry, not a proprietary practice system. Its concepts may be researched, tested, challenged, taught, adapted, and translated across research, clinical and professional practice, education, technology, design, policy, community work, and the arts.
Applications Built by the Founder
The following platforms were developed by Jamilia Shani in conversation with the field she has proposed. They are applications of Maternal Development, not the field itself. Maternal Development does not require affiliation with either platform.
Mother-facing technology & creative translation
Forpartum explores the translation of Maternal Development into mother-facing experiences through technology, software, music, sound, narrative, play, interactive design, and other creative forms.
One founder-developed application of the field. Not the official or exclusive consumer expression of Maternal Development.
Professional learning & practice translation
Propartum explores the translation of Maternal Development into professional learning through simulation-based education, reflective practice, case-based reasoning, professional tools, and maternal-development-informed support.
One founder-developed application of the field. Professionals do not need to train through Propartum to work in conversation with Maternal Development.
Work Across the Field
Maternal Development is intended to support inquiry beyond its founder’s own work. As the field develops, this space may document independent research, theoretical developments, critiques, educational work, professional applications, creative practice, and community-based work developed in conversation with Maternal Development.
Independent work is not required to route through Forpartum or Propartum Institute. Scholars, practitioners, educators, artists, community workers, and institutions who engage with Maternal Development’s concepts may do so on their own terms. MaternalDevelopment.org does not imply endorsement of independent work by documenting it.

The Public Commons
MaternalDevelopment.org is the field’s free public infrastructure. The definition, domains, lifespan model, frameworks, glossary, bibliography, research agenda, and lineage are freely available and not paywalled. Professional depth at Propartum and applied experiences at Forpartum fund the free commons — but the commons belongs to the field.
