The study of the mother as a developing human being.
Becoming a mother is not only a medical event, a caregiving role, or a change in family structure. It is a major developmental transformation involving the brain, body, identity, relationships, perception, and meaning. This is the field that studies it.

The mother is not merely the environment in which a child develops.
She is a developing adult human being undergoing a major biopsychosocial transformation of her own. Every neighboring discipline studies something near her. Maternal health studies her body. Maternal mental health studies her distress. Child development studies her child. Parenting education studies her performance.
Across the literature reviewed for this project, no widely established standalone discipline was identified that organizes the mother's development across the lifespan as its central and comprehensive subject. Maternal Development is being proposed to occupy that center.
She does not return to herself. She develops a relationship with who she is becoming.

Jamilia Shani entered psychology in 2018 intending to become a developmental psychologist. In 2020, at four months postpartum, she left school while undergoing the very transformation her education never centered. She went looking for a body of knowledge that treated the mother herself as a developing human being. She found pieces everywhere. What she could not find was the disciplinary home that held them together. She began building it.
